I was invited to collaborate with Vuori on a couple of clothing designs last year. In the process of creating that design I generated many images that were not able to be used. One particular unused design had something really magical about it and I knew I wanted to pursue it further. After some time I thought I might like to make a print out of it. Printing offers so many unique variables to adjust in ways that painting just can’t, it also means that collaboration needs to happen and I liked that idea too.
Around the same time I meet a guy surfing an under the radar spot here in San Diego, he said that he was a printer, I asked if I could come by his shop and when I did I realized that he was super capable and skilled and that I needed to do something with him. That guy was Daniel from Clove street press and we began collaborating on this print together.
I showed him the image and mentioned that I hoped to do something with holographic foil. We found some special pearlized paper, dialed in the letter press and just started experimenting. We ended up finding three different color ways that had a synergistic effect with the foil and ended up with this really kind of wild print!
As a kid I used to go fishing with my father. I was always fascinated with the way the caught fish would look when I would first pull it out of the water, alive with changing colors, glistening and shining in this beautifully delicate way. Maybe a little bit like how octopus and cuttle fish can change the way they look, these little fish seemed capable of some of the same tricks of light. My little kid brain was just on fire with interest and awe. That memory came rushing back when I first saw this particular combination of paper and holographic foil together. It interferes with the way your eyes interpret light and space in such an interesting way. They look dramatically different in different lighting conditions. It is really fun to just hold it in your hand, move it back and forth and watch this print warp and mutate into all these different shapes and colors. I loved getting to experiment, discover and create this print, and I really hope you feel just a bit of that awe and wonder that I felt as a kid looking at the fish when you look at this print.
